Resumen:
The zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester is largely used for power system protection
against overvoltages. The arrester limits the voltage at the terminal of the power apparatus
to be protected, transforming the electrical surge energy into thermal energy. In this work, a
study of the thermal behavior of ZnO arresters under the influence o f electrical and thermal
stress, is carried out. A computer program based on the finite difference method with
boundary fitted coordinate was developed to predict the heat transfer behavior of a test
section. Laboratory measurements and computed results are in close agreement.
