Cutting and welding characteristics of an oxy-hydrogen machine.
An oxy-hydrogen welding machine was modified by introducing polyethylene separators between the electrodes in order to avoid a short circuit with consequences of explosion and fire. The polyethylene mass decreases the amount of electrolyte and hindered the passage of gas bubbles, increasing the ohmic resistance of the system, called solution overvoltage. This caused a decrease in conductivity and lowered the performance of the system. Numerous tests were carried out with different concentrations of electrolyte, between 4% and 13% of potassium hydroxide, with an increase in yield proportional to the increase in concentration being observed. In the conditions of the reactor that does not contain a gas separating membrane, the system does not support concentrations above 15% of potassium hydroxide (KOH).
