Resumo:
The emergence of the concept of sustainable development has brought changes in the
companies' way of acting, in the sense of adopting everyday practices that show
respect and concern for the environment. In this context of changes, the Higher
Education Institutions (IES) are also pressed to be active agents of this action, once
they possess an important role in the sense of defining and applying policies aimed at
the development of an environmental awareness through research, teaching and
extension actions, as well as the implementation of sustainable practices through their
management. This way, the goal of the present study is to identify sustainability
practices in the Semiarid Sustainable Development Center – Campus of Sumé – PB,
in the aspects of teaching, research, extension and management. Regarding the
approach to the problem, this research is classified as qualitative and as for the
methodological procedures, case study is used. For that, we have made use of
documentary research, interviews and we applied a checklist that addresses A3P's
thematic axes. It was evidenced that there are disciplines in most courses, as well as
research and extension projects, that contemplate the theme and some sustainability
actions being developed in the current management, however, isolated, once it was
not possible to observe an effective institutional policy aimed at campus sustainability.
The analysis of the results indicated the need to broaden the discussion about
sustainability with all segments that make up the institution, since the subject requires
effort from the entire academic community to achieve the expected results, both in
teaching, research and extension as in university management.
