Resumo:
The idea of complementing traditional SPT with torque measurement was
initially proposed by Ranzini (1988) however only in 1991 it was used in Sao Paulo
state (Decourt and Quaresma Filho, 1991). On ther other hand, in the north-east of
Brazil, SPT-T was used rarely from the practical point of view but without any
research data avaiable.
The present research used SPT-T with the main objectives of evaluating its
performance and obtaining parameters for foundation design aiming to a database
formation. In the same time, Menard pressuremeter tests (PMT) will be carried out
for the determination of strength and deformation parameters. The results obtained
will be used for a correlation statical analysis.
The campain of tests was accomplished in a sand deposit located in the
coast of Joao Pessoa (Paraiba state). This deposit was first submitted to a locally
and normally used improvement by placing sand and gravel piles with the objective
of replacing deed foundation by shallow foundation.
In a general way, it was observed that the use of existing parameters
indicated the positive influence of the improvement of the sandy deposit. Also, the
results showed that after the improvement the parameters obtained by SPT-T and
PMT were not satisfactorily correlated. Due to this fact it is necessary to analyze
what cause the lack of satisfactory correlation, which seems to be caused by the
disturbance due to the driven of the sand and gravel piles.
