Nursing Care Systematization is characterized as a methodology to organize and systematize care, based on the scientific method. It aims to identify the weaknesses in the health-disease process and the needs of nursing actions, as well as to instruct interventions for the promotion, prevention, recovery and rehabilitation of patient and family health. In this context, the importance of implementing the Nursing Care Systematization in the Intensive Care Unit is highlighted. The study aimed to analyze the understanding of intensive care unit nurses about the systematization of nursing care. This is a descriptive exploratory field study with a qualitative approach, which was developed at the Adult Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in the city of Cajazeiras, Paraíba. The sample consisted of five nurses. The research data were collected through a semi-structured interview, containing objective and subjective questions, which were answered by the participating researcher, using a portable recorder. The analysis of the information collected through subjective questions was based on Laurence Bardin's Content Analysis technique. All stages of the study faithfully followed Resolution 510/2016 of the National Health Council. Through the study it was possible to identify difficulties in knowledge about Systematization of Nursing Care by the participants, and have many doubts in its applicability. Everyone considers it important, however, only associated this importance with the recognition of the profession. Regarding the instrument used in the unit where the study was conducted, all participants reported that it needs to be improved. Regarding the difficulties or limitations in the implementation of Nursing Care Systematization, most reported the lack of time as the main barrier. The study collaborates so that managers can recognize the importance of the implementation of the SAE, and thus offer conditions for infrastructure, human resources, training, which aim to make professionals more capable the applicability of the method, knowing how to recognize the difference that it provides the nursing care offered to the patient and family.
