Resumo:
Music therapy translates into a possibility of promoting better quality of life for institutionalized
elderly, especially because it is intrinsically related to the spatialization of these subjects, since it is in
a new space recognized as a place where it was institutionalized. The institutionalized elderly, as well
as every human being has their own cultures and identity, elements inherent in geography, which
when denied or poorly motivated bring health risks, especially regarding the generation of elderly,
who need continuous mobility and motivation. This paper aims to investigate how music helps in the
process of resocialization of institutionalized elderly, making possible (re) knowledge and
strengthening the identity and culture of elderly considering the space in which it is inserted and, if the
institutionalized space is configured as space / place. To this end, it started from the Extension Project
entitled „Music Therapy as a Promoter for the Best Quality of Life of Children Hospitalized at HUJB-
UFCG, in the City of Cajazeiras-PB ', developed at the Lar de Idosos, in this city. The time frame of
the investigation took place during the period 2019.2, however relative to the period from 2015 to the
present day. The research was conducted by bibliographic, field and documentary survey. The
information was obtained through observation and semi-structured interviews with the project
coordinator and the nurse responsible for the field study institution, and by analyzing the reports of the
project in the years of the study. 2015, 2017 and 2018, in addition to the observations and experiences
of the author of this work as a volunteer in the Extension Project, from the period 2016.1 to the present
day. Our place of speech is as a student in the Geography Degree, with participation as an extension
project volunteer (PROBEX), held at the Teacher Training Center (CFP) of the Federal University of
Campina Grande (UFCG), Campus Cajazeiras , Paraíba. The research was conducted by bibliographic,
field and documentary survey. The information was obtained through observation and semi-structured
interviews with the project coordinator and the nurse responsible for the field study institution, and by
analyzing the reports of the project in the years of the study. 2015, 2017 and 2018. Thus, both the
interview speeches as well as the fragments extracted from the reports will be treated based on authors
who portray the theme in question, in order to better base the research. As a hypothesis, it started from
the fact that institutionalized elderly people tend to suffer health deficits when their contacts with
family members, friends, and their place of residence have been reduced for most of their lives. As a
result, they suffer crop losses, devaluation and sometimes forgetfulness of their identities. Thus, the
presence of the Extension Project based on music therapy strengthens bonds and contributes to the
physical and mental recovery of institutionalized elderly. The study aims to contribute to society
understanding the importance of attention to the human person, especially the elderly throughout their
lives, in order to enable their inclusion with the family. On the other hand, it presents the vast
contribution of university extension as a strengthening element of the culture and identity of the
elderly, endowing them with the capacity for spatialization and recognition of the new living space as
a place of positive affectivities.
