Resumo:
Pregnancy represents an important phase in a woman's life, as it allows her to experience
countless experiences and changes in every nuance of her life and has its apex of emotions in
childbirth. During this period, the nurse develops a primordial role to follow the pregnancy-
puerperal cycle so that it occurs successfully and, thus, favors the experience of positive
experiences. The study aimed to investigate the expectations and experiences of
primigravidae about childbirth. It is a field of study, exploratory, descriptive, qualitative
approach. Held between July and October of this year, in the Family Health Strategies of the
city of Cajazeiras, Pb, and at the participants' homes. The sample obtained and presented in
the study consisted of 11 primigravidae. Data were collected through a semi-structured
interview, through a script prepared by the researchers, with objective and subjective
questions, which were asked by the participating researcher, using a portable recorder.
Objective questions were organized and presented in tables, using simple descriptive
statistics. Subjective responses were subjected to thematic content analysis. The research
continued respecting the ethical and legal aspects present in Resolution No. 466/12. It can be
seen that the expectations of the primiparous women were not consistent with the lived
experiences. In order to elucidate this information, the discussion had the following categories
regarding the expectations: Positive perspectives on childbirth, Negative expectations on
childbirth, Preference for cesarean section and Regarding the lived experiences, the following
categories emerged: Expectations about unreached childbirth, The continuous choice for
cesarean section and Negative experiences about childbirth. Thus, it was concluded that
health professionals need to be sensitized regarding the provision of qualified assistance for
maternal and child welfare, contributing to the deconstruction of the current obstetric
scenario, which has the process of parturition as something unpleasant and source of suffering
for the parturient woman, reflecting on the significant increase in cesarean deliveries without
indication.
