Environmental biotechnology has expanded the applicability of strategies aimed at the conservation of natural resources, strengthening the goals that seek to implement sustainable development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of perception on environmental biotechnology among public school teachers in the Western and Eastern Cariri microregions of Paraíba. The work was developed in ten public high schools, being distributed five in the Western Cariri microregion and five located in the Eastern Cariri microregion, Paraíba state. Thus, the social actors of the research were teachers linked to these public schools and who were responsible for the curriculum components in the areas of biology, chemistry and geography, which were configured in relation to the axis of environmental biotechnology. The methods adopted were participant observation and the application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with the aid of a portable recorder and a diary for additional information. The teachers sampled in the Paraíba Western Cariri microregion had greater knowledge about environmental biotechnology and its techniques when compared to the teachers from the Eastern Cariri microregion. These results were related to the socioeconomic data of the social actors surveyed and also to the process of their formation regarding contact with biotechnology during their qualification and professional practice. In this sense, the Western Cariri excelled in using its tools more intensively to access information on biotechnology and the environment, as well as addressing in its classes on the subject using didactic tools to strengthen student learning. Thus, it has been reported that the level of understanding and application of environmental biotechnology among Western Cariri teachers was higher than in the Eastern. Therefore, the generated data are important subsidies for the implementation of strategies that can increase the applicability of environmental biotechnology in public schools of Cariri Paraibano.
