Abstract:
This research was motivated from the accomplishment of supervised internships in Youth and Adult
Education (EJA) classes. We applied a relatively new methodological strategy, which included
Scientific and Technical Literacy (ACT), as well as Meaningful Learning, theoretical perspectives
that when combined with classroom practice for the development of autonomy, communication skills
and competence development, and student skills so that they can negotiate their own decisions in the
face of concrete situations in everyday life. Our proposal was to develop and execute an
Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality (IIR), theorized by Gerard Fourez, using electric iron as a
research tool. Thus, we aim to build, with students, new concepts about concepts that are
interconnected with the use of this appliance. The research was carried out in a 3rd year EJA class at
Dom Moises Coelho State School of Elementary and High School, in the city of Cajazeiras/PB. We
used as a data collection instrument a semi-structured questionnaire, systematic observations,
photographic records and the production of group panels. At the end of the research, we conclude that
when exposed to new methodologies, students awaken a deeper look at what is being presented in the
classroom. In addition, through the IRS, they were able to construct new conceptions on various
concepts that encompass the use of electric iron.
