Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the formation and resignification of the June dance group
(quadrilha) in the Felizardo district (Ipaumirim-CE), where we go over the meanings and
forms of appropriation that this cultural manifestation acquired between the period 1985-
2013. Since cultures have a tendency to change over time, it is necessary to understand
how the field of tension between the traditional and the modern is presented. Thus, the
study focuses on the symbolic disputes present in the specific group of the “Arrasta-Pé”
group, the June festivities promoted in the locality, the experiences and the speeches
themselves that value the realization of this event. To this end, we use Oral History,
interviewing members of June groups and also using photographs and videos (independent
productions), which allowed, with their different languages, to elucidate the changes in the
image of the group and the social issues that contributed to their reinventions. In this sense,
the concept of “invented tradition” proposed by Eric Hobsbawm, is a guiding element for
understanding the reworkings in the group image, since the author marks this process of
“invention” as a formalization and ritualization that maintains a link with the past, even
artificial, by the use of repetition.
