Resumo:
Popular music throughout the twentieth century suffered major debates and
transformations while the whole structure of Brazil was immersed in various socio-
political-economic turmoil. Our study seeks to understand the process of rereading and
modernizing from Samba to MPB (here defined as a concept and not a style or rhythm).
This problem will be addressed through the productions of Antonio Carlos Jobim,
because we believe that him trajectory and career of him as a composer can help us to
reflect on the dissent and multiple faces that permeate the middle of Samba, passing
through Bossa Nova and consolidating the term Brazilian Popular Music
from the 1970. The analyzes will be based on Tom Jobim's songs (both prior and
contemporary to bossa nova) as sources, serving as a guiding thread for our narrative
and argument. Methodologically we will be guided by the proposals of Marcos
Napolitano (2002), to consider “text” and “context” and trace the parallels and
possibilities of interpretation of the songs, not only within the musical scenario, but in
the breadth and transversality of culture and art within from various areas of society.
