Tannery residues are potential pollution sources and its use can accumulate heavy metals in
soil and plant. In order to evaluate the effects from the addition o f tannery residues produced
in Campina Grande, Brazil, on soil properties and cultivated plants, laboratory and
greenhouse experiments ware carried out in 2006/07 at the UFCG. In the laboratory ,
samples o f acid soil were incubated during 40 days with calcium carbonate and tannery
residues in equal amounts, ten and twenty times bigger than calcium carbonate amount.
After this period pH and CE o f the soil samples incubated were determined. The experiment
all design was a randomized blocks with three replications. Capsicum annum L. plants were
cultivated in pots with capacity of 22 kg. Tannery residue additions at rates of 0.98; 1.21;
1.44; 1.67; 1.89 and 2.17 g kg were compared to calcium carbonate treatment. Chemical
soil alterations were evaluated, as well as the effect of residue application on the plant
development, it was observed that the application o f tannery sludge in equal amounts of
calcium carbonate were not efficient in the neutralization o f acidity soil. However the pH o f
soil has been increased by tannery sludge when applied in the ratios ten and twenty times
bigger than calcium carbonate. The amount o f tannery sludge ten times bigger (13,8 t ha 4 )
than calcium carbonate recommended to ameliorate soil acidity may be more feasible than
that twenty times bigger, because it will neutralize the soil acidity without raising its EC.
Tennery residues increased the soil salinity and Cr contents while no alterations of soil
fertility were observed. Tennery residues did not modify Capsicum annum L. development.
Tennery residues treatments were not toxic for the plants.
