Resumo:
Hospitalization is experienced as a difficult time in anyone's life. When this eventuality
affects the child and adolescent, this fact is experienced as a moment of crisis, as it removes
them from their family and social context and presents them in an environment different from
the reality of their daily lives. They find themselves in a new environment, filled with
strangers and painful procedures, which can lead to emotional problems that can have
negative consequences and reverberate throughout their lives. The objective was to analyze
the feelings attributed by children and adolescents about the hospitalization process in a
university hospital. This is a descriptive exploratory field study with a qualitative approach,
carried out at the Júlio Bandeira de Melo University Hospital, located in the city of
Cajazeiras, in the interior of Paraíba, more precisely in the sector of the Child Health Care
Unit. and teenager. The population consisted of 60 patients and the sample consisted of 13
participants, 10 children and 03 adolescents. It consists of a section of a larger research
entitled: Clinical-epidemiological and quality profile of care coverage in a university hospital,
registered on the Brazil platform and authorized by opinion No. 2,672,468 of the Ethics and
Research Committee of the Federal University of Campina Grande. The research data were
obtained through a semi-structured interview and analyzed through the Bardin Content
Analysis, emerging the following categories: Category I- Emotional symptoms and
consequences presented by hospitalized children and adolescents; Category II- Factors that
contribute positively to the adaptation to hospitalization of children and adolescents. The
results indicate that the main feelings triggered by hospitalization are sadness and fear,
especially the fear of the unknown. However, there are some factors that minimize these
symptoms and contributors to their adaptation and coping during this process, such as the
relationship between patients and service professionals, the presence of parents during
hospitalization and the structuring of the environment. . This study can contribute to health
professionals in the reorganization of care that is offered, focused on the peculiar needs of this
public, as well as ensuring comprehensive care that meets not only the therapeutic needs but
also their emotional needs, aiming at a more qualified and humanized.
