Resumen:
The aim of this paper is to analyze how the images presented in Senhora dos Afogados, by
Nelson Rodrigues, symbolically relate to the Oedipus and Electra complexes. To do so, we
start from Freud’s (1996) studies on conscious and unconscious, and we also go through the
concepts of the Oedipus and Electra complexes, based on Freudian theories and on
Laplanche's (2001) theories. In addition to that, we base our study on the theorists Sabato
Magaldi (1992 - 1998 - 2004), Hugo Adler Pereira (1998) and Ruy Castro (1992), who
contributed to the understanding of the historical context of Brazilian theater and Nelson
Rodrigues's life and work. As to the main theories used for the analysis of the play, we
resorted to the works of Jean Chevalier (1999) and Patrice Pavis (2007). Our work consists of
a qualitative approach, bibliographic in nature, and our analysis proposes a relationship
between the elements of the dramatic text with the Oedipus and Electra complexes, thus
relating the literary text with psychoanalytic studies, in order to finally establish relations of
meaning among images, symbols, and the interdiction of the complexes in the characters of
Senhora dos afogados.
