In a computer network, switches have a major influence on performance. Switches
use buffers in order to avoid loss o f data that cannot be passed on immediately. Beside the
size o f buffers, the algorithms they use for inserting and retrieving data have a big influence
on switch performance.
This work presents a performance evaluation of an A TM multi-class buffer used in
a switch called COMATM. The evaluation was done within a simulation framework called
Arena, using a model o f the buffer and injecting various selected types of network traffic
into it. The performance parameters obtained where compared to those obtained by
simulations of a FIFO buffer under the same traffic conditions.
