Improper disposal of solid waste is responsible for major environmental problems and the tendency is that the volume of waste generated is growing, becoming necessary political intervention to control the actions of generation, handling, treatment and final disposal of solid waste, in order to minimize environmental and social risks. The cities should apply efforts to comply with current legislation, planning and implementing necessary actions to regulate the management of solid waste generated in their territorial space. From this context, this study aimed to evaluate the management of municipal solid waste in the city of Campina Grande - PB. The survey was conducted on the basis of a specific case having, therefore, the case study of a descriptive nature as a means of investigation. Data collection was conducted through interviews and observation, using forms and scripts. The data were processed by qualitative analysis. The results showed that urban collection in the city is performed regularly, taking almost the entire municipality. The municipal solid waste generated in the city are arranged in landfill, in order to minimize environmental risks, to health and public safety. It was found that the targets for universalization of the collect are being achieved, and the executive project for the recovery of Lixão of Mutirão area was developed. However, some important actions such as selective collection have not yet been implemented, which forbid the treatment of the municipal solid waste. The non-availability of resources is indicated as the greatest obstacle to the progress of the activities. Finally, it was found that one of the major challenges in landfill management is the high volume of incoming waste, aggravated by the lack of implementation of selective collection and treatment techniques.
