Abstract:
In order to study the emergente, initial growth and the tolerante behavior of melon
cultivars subjected to irrigation with saline water. The experiment was conducted in a
protected environment (greenhouse) at the Centre for Science and Technology
Agrifood - CCTA. Federal University of Campina Grande - UFCG, located in the
municipality of Pombal, Paraíba, PB. It study was arranged in a factorial 3 x 5 a
completely randomized design, consisting of two cultivars of melon (CI - Gaúcho
redondo e C2- Gaúcho Casca de carvalho e C3- Halles Best Jumbo) and ave leveis
of irrigation water salinity (0.6, 1 .2, 1 .8, 2.4 and 3.0 dS m-l) with four replications and
ten plants per repetition. The melon seedlings were grown in trays with a capacity of
30 notes of O.l dm3 substrate during the first 30 days after sowing. During this period
the plants were monitored when the emergency, initial growth, dry matter
accumulation and the salinity tolerance index. The data were submitted to analysis of
variance test 'F'. And in cases of significance was polynomial regression analysis
performed for the salinity leveis factor of irrigation water at 5% significance Increased
irrigation water salinity reduced growth and dry matter accumulation of melon
cultivars. The cultivar Halles Best Jumbo got smaller reductions and higher yields
under saline conditions, se it is to grow more tolerant. The cultivar round Gaúcho got
the biggest reductions in growth and dry matter accumulation and to cultivate more
sensitive to salinity.
