Resumo:
The urban space has undergone several changes throughout history, and these changes were not mostly beneficial for building a healthy environment. The urban sustainable development emerges as a mean of mitigating the impacts caused by uncontrolled growth as well as offer guidelines for building a sustainable urban space. Therefore it is necessary to adopt indicators that can measure the cities sustainability. The study aims to analyze the urban sustainability of the city of Queimadas - Paraíba, using as reference the model developed by Martins (2012), aiming to provide an informational support for the sustainable management of the city . Regarding the methodology, the study has a descriptive character with an exploratory type, characterized as a quantitative- qualitative study and case study, having as research locus the city of Queimadas and Martin Model (2012) as a framework to the study. The results show that the sustainability rate of Queimadas is potentially at the sustainable level, with better results for the matrix concerning the city as techno-physical representation as sustainable, followed by the matrix that comes to town in its aspects of quality of life and the matrix expressing the city as a public policy legitimation space, both potentially sustainable. However, issues such as selective collection system of solid waste and preservation of historical heritage, resource management efficiency need attention and investment in public policies for the establishment of a sustainable environment. Thus, this research contributes to the assessment of the municipality's sustainability as well as for decision-making in seeking of establishing a sustainable urban space.
