Abstract:
The weevil, Ca//osoórz/c-/zus maca//aftas (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) is the principal storage
pest of cowpea, causing losses in the order of up to 90%. The contrai of this pest is being
carried out through the use of chemicals of diHerent toxicological classes. The indiscriminate
use ofthese products in recent years has created a series ofecological disturbances such as the
development of resistant genotypes of insects, toxic waste accumulation ín food for human
consumption and environmental contamination. As an altemative to this method of control,
this study evaluated the eHect repellent and insecticide Neem powder formulations
(lzad//"ac/z/a //zdlca A. Juss) on the contrai Ca//osobruc/zus maca//a/us in stored seeds of
cowpea (mg/za unguicz//afa (L.) Walp. ). Treatment with fmit powder .dzad/rac#/a í zdica, at a
dose of 1,00% compared to 20g of cowpea grain, caused most repellent effect. The leal
powder treatment caused eye-catching effect, with the highest rate observed in the
concentration of 0,75%; treatment with bark mixture and followed the same attractiveness
behavior with neutral eííect at concentrations of 1 ,00% and 0,25%, respectively. There was a
higher mortality rate in the grains treated with mixture(sheet + bark + fi'uits) of .d. /ndíca,
where the dose of 1,00% mixture incorporated unto cowpea grain eííect caused already
insecticide in the Hlrst 24 hours of exposure insect üeatment. In conclusion: leaf powder, bark
and blend has attractive effect and insecticide on Ca//osoórz/c;zus maca/a/us; the 6ormulation
ftuit powder of -,4zadfrac/z/a in(#ca A. Juss. It has insecticidal and repellent effects on
Ca//osoóruc#us maca/aftas. Powders of leaves, bark and Neem plant fruit can be important
tools for the management of C. maca/afzzs storage units.
