Abstract:
Among knowledge areas that use scientific computing to optimize their applications, this
work explores the interdisciplinarity between Law and Computer Science (CS). Law specialists use several sources during their normative and jurisprudential research, especially legislation and judgement documents. The present study aims to help Law specialists to deal with those sources, proposing a Legal Knowledge Management System (LKMS). As these sources are rich in structural and semantical information, a SGCL can save human time and effort by extracting and processing this knowledge. As a fundamental part of it, a model of Law sources was developed, based on a generic textual-temporal model, emphasizing structural, temporal and interrelational description of brazilian sources. Advanced operations to automate specialists’ tasks were also described. Besides modeling, structural aspects of legal and judgement documents were also formalized with the Extended Backus-Naur Form, aiming a posterior Information Extraction, to be performed by the LKMS. The model evaluation was made with a prototype, using brazilian norms described in article 59 of Federal Constitution
of 1988 and judgement documents of Federal Superior Court and Justice Superior
Court. The formal description of Law sources were also based on those documents.
