Resumen:
The humanity uses plants for both food and medicinal purposes from the very beginning of his life. Even today, approximately 80% of the world's population is dependent on herbal medicines, and one of the forms used is tincture. The main objective of this research was to quantify the total phenolics present in jatobá tincture (Hymenaea spp) from the home remedy workshop of the Center for Popular Education (CENEP), in the municipality of Nova Palmeiras/PB. Jatobá is used in popular medicine as vermifuge, antifungal, antioxidant, expectorant, against pulmonary affections in general, among other applications. As for the physical-chemical parameters, the pH, total solids and phenolic content expressed as tannic acid were evaluated by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The results obtained from the jatoba dye analysis revealed a homogeneous mixture of reddish brown coloration, mean pH of 5.11 ± 0.01, total solids 3.37 ± 0.02 and total polyphenol content of 3.81% ± 0 , 20. It was observed that the best results in the spectrophotometer reading were obtained in the dilution of the 200 μL aliquot. Although the method used allowed the quantification of total phenolics by UV, it is suggested to carry out new studies to investigate the origins of the variations, as well as the procedures in the preparation of the samples, judging the need for adjustments in the procedure adopted for the quantification of phenolics totals in jatobá tinctures.
