Abstract:
Waste management and its use in a correct way minimizes environmental impacts and has
been gaining strength in recent years through environmental management and its legal aspects
(BARBIERI, 2015). Considering these aspects, the study aims to analyze the waste
management in the Engenho X cachaça producer in the city of Areia-PB, from the use of the
residues in the production process of cachaça. The research has a qualitative and exploratory
character, for data collection an interview script was applied with the manager of the company
studied. The collected results showed that during the production process the main residues
produced are the straw that is the leftovers after the harvest, the bagasse that are leftovers after
the milling, the ashes that are originated after the burning of the bagasse in the boilers and the
vinasse that is the largest portion of residue left over after distillation. Engenho X, despite being a producer of artisanal cachaça, has a significant reuse of waste,
using almost all leftovers, straw, ashes and vinasse through fertirrigation, used in the
preparation of the soil for the next harvest, the bagasse used as source of energy with its
burning and sale for the manufacture of animal feed, and the other part of the vinasse in the
production of ethanol. This shows that the company has a concern to reduce environmental
impacts through the management of its waste.
