Resumo:
The combination of a ceramic plate fixed on a ductile plate is one of the best solution
to ballistic protection.
Eleven types of composite plates were developed for level III (7,62 mm FMJ) of
ballistic protection. Various types of materials were used as back up plate : polycarbonate,
acrylic and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). For interface materials
were selected : felt, rubber, honeycomb polycarbonate, polyurethane foam and Sika 255
adhesive. Three thickness of alumina tiles were used : 8mm, 10mm e 12,7 mm.
Various techniques were used in order to quantify and to qualify the damage caused by
the ballistic impact: deflection measure of the ductile plate, stereoscopic analysis, study of
particle size of ceramic fragmentation and residual velocity measure. The use of interface
materials proved to be a way to otimization of the ballistic protection capacity of a light
composite armor system. Two types of composite plates were selected for ballistic armor :
alumina ceramic tile + felt + UHMWPE plate and alumina ceramic tile + rubber + UHMWPE
plate.
