Resumo:
The inappropriate use of natural resources has been increasingly frequent, causing an acceleration in the deterioration of ecosystems and promoting environmental imbalances. In this sense, the objective of the research was to evaluate possible interactions between the vegetal extractive activity and desertification in the municipality of Sumé-PB, region of Cariri in Paraíba. The work was carried out in the municipality of Sumé-PB, located in the region of Cariri Paraíba, the data used to measure the analysis were extracted from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE. The literature review was carried out by consulting bibliographic collections. The study used a descriptive approach, in which it seeks to investigate possible interactions between plant extraction and desertification, taking into account the periods between 2004 to 2018. Discussions on the theme involving plant extraction in the municipality of Sumé, are related with the period in which the producer needs a complementary income, to assist in the family support, however the inadequate form of the use of the natural resources, as well as the climatic variations potentiate the process of desertification in areas in the region of the cariri in Paraíba.
