The selection of literary works for school reading entails numerous questions. Within private schools, these choices can provide data on the conceptions of literature and possible implications for teaching. This research had as objective to investigate the criteria of selection of literary works indicated for elementary school, from the 2nd to 5th year, in six private schools in Campina Grande, State of Paraiba. Methodologically, we used the following research tools: questionnaires applied to teachers and coordinators, analysis of the works selected and indicated by the schools. The theoretical basis for the research was as follows: Perrotti (1986), Azevedo (1999) regarding the discussion of the presence of pragmatism and the concept of paradidatic readers; Aguiar (2001), Zilberman (2003), Cademartori (2012), Held (1980), Andruetto (2012), Meireles (2016) and Peter Hunt (2010) to reflect on all the artistic character of literary works, among others. We subdivided our discussion into four chapters. In the first, we present some definitions of what is conceptualized as children's literature over time, trying to delimit their specificities. In the second, we show how children's literature is linked to pedagogy, and how this utilitarian perspective historically traverses this genre, until the present day. In the third, from the collected data, we comment on the literary formation of the teachers and the implications in the selection of the books indicated by the schools. And, in the fourth chapter, we bring the analysis of the lists of books obtained from two basic categories: literatary and paradidatic. In the final considerations, we discuss the fact that there are still doubts in the conception of what would be a literary text and how this affects the work with literature in the classroom. We bring some options that the teacher can make use of to collaborate with his/her selection process of literary works. Finally, we reflect on the possible contributions of research to the selection of literary works in elementary school.
