Abstract:
The improper management of construction and demolition wastes has caused negative environmental impacts in terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric ecosystems. Such impacts, together with the probable depletion of raw materials, encourage the search for means to reuse or recycle construction and demolition wastes. The objective of this study is to verify the performance of pavers produced with the replacement of natural aggregates by triturated wastes from a demolition work in the city of Pombal – PB, Brazil. For this, it was considered a ratio of 1:4 (cement: aggregate) with different percentages of replacement of the natural aggregates by triturated wastes. The procedure consisted of molding pavers and obtaining their physical and mechanical properties, emphasizing the compressive strength and water absorption. The tests were carried out at the 3rd and 28th days of cure, and the substitutions of natural by alternative aggregates were carried out under the ratios of 0%, 50% and 100%. The results reveal that demolition wastes have potential to be used as substitutes of natural aggregates in the production of pavers, which can be considered to be a promising alternative to mitigate environmental, social and economic-related problems.
