In recent years, humanity has been experiencing a crisis scenario in relation to population growth and the degradation of the environment, increasingly requiring a theoretical and flexible effort of man-made problems to the environment. Thus, this research has as main objective to calculate the water footprint in the sub-basin of the Paraíba River, located in the northeastern semi-arid region, in the year 2018 and to analyze its sustainability. Based on this, analyzes were carried out with the water footprint methods in order to verify their efficiency in generating information on the amount of water consumed in the main sectors of water use. The research is classified as exploratory and descriptive, since it involves bibliographic research, case study, data collection and also establish relations among variables so that it can reach the final result. According to the results, for the year 2018, when analyzing the entire context of the Paraíba River sub-basin, it is possible to consider it as sustainable. Total water consumption is unsustainable in the non-rainy period. In the face of this research, it is believed that the results can serve to plan the efficient consumption of water, as well as to alert mainly the population, companies and environmental managers about the amount of water that is being used in the various sectors.
