This monograph is a case study on the role of the family in school success and failure, held at Senador José Gaudêncio State School, Serra Branca (PB). In order to identify the participation of families in the school life of children, addressing what would contribute to the success or failure of the child / student. This is a qualitative, research, whose empirical part was developed through questionnaires aimed at the school, parents and students. The theoretical contribution is concentrated mainly on the reflections of Michael Young (2007), Lahire (1997), Ioschpe (2012) and others, presents the powerful knowledge; reflects the idea of family cultural capital and discusses how the sociology of education addresses the family-school relationship related to success and failure in school. Results indicate that survey participants have an understanding of what family participation is, although each one has distinct papers in teaching and learning, but each one knows what their duties are towards the school. Considering that the lack of family participation is due to the lack of time brought about by the parenting profession, school achievement in the students' view would be related to both parent participation in school events, incentives given, and how teachers work. interdisciplinary knowledge in content, classroom subjects and, school failure would be attributed to teachers' lack of mastery approaching the theory and practice in particular subjects.
