Resumo:
Several studies have already documented that populations that maintain a direct relationship with nature can present a very accurate knowledge of the environment in which they live. However, this relationship has triggered some environmental problems, directly interfering with the distribution of faunal populations, especially for the birds group. This research was developed with rural residents of the municipality of Jaçanã - Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast of Brazil; aiming at: registering the ethnoornithological knowledge of the local human community. Data were obtained through the application of semi-structured questionnaires to a sample composed of a total of 40 residents, represented by men and women aged between 21 and 85 years. From the data obtained, a checklist was elaborated containing 94 ethnospecies of birds occurring in the municipality, belonging to 36 families. Regarding the possible threat factors for the occurrence of this group in the region, hunting activities, drought and deforestation were mainly mentioned. The results presented in this work show the importance of recording the knowledge that human populations hold about biodiversity, as a fundamental basis for the definition of strategies that allow biological and cultural conservation.
