Any professional, who in their work environment lives with constant stressors and for a long period, are susceptible to suffer from the burnout syndrome. Syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low will carry staff at work. Nursing is one of the professions that can be affected by burnout, as it lives daily with drudgery. This study aims to characterize the socio-demographic profile of nurses at the Hospital Regional de Cajazeiras - PB, as well as to verify the presence of burnout syndrome in nurses working in this institution and to assess the levels of the syndrome in these professionals. This is an exploratory study with a quantitative approach. The research was developed at the Hospital Regional de cajazeiras - HRC, located in the city of Cajazeiras - PB. The sample consisted of 31 nurses who work in different sectors of the hospital. To carry out this study, resolution 196/96 was considered, which deals with research involving human beings,
Meeting the ethical principle of autonomy and consent and clarification to research participants. To perform data collection, a questionnaire was used.
Composed of 14 objective questions to identify the sample and relevant to the objectives of the study, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory - MBI to measure the incidence of burnout syndrome. Data were analyzed using simple statistics and presented through graphs and tables. The sample was characterized by the predominance of females (71%); age group between 20 and 30 years (84%) and in relation to working hours, 97% work during the day and night. Most professionals consider their work stressful, and this was the response of 77% of nurses. Most nurses, 84% reported not knowing the definition of "burnout syndrome". As for the levels of burnout in dimensions, it was found that 29% had high levels of emotional exhaustion and 26% had medium levels; in depersonalizing, 22% are placed at high levels and 23% at medium levels; in the low level of accomplishment of personnel at work, it is observed that 10% have low levels and 22% have medium levels. There is a high average in the "emotional exhaustion" dimension, signaling a need to intervene with these professionals, as they are depleted of physical and emotional resources,
they may suffer from burnout syndrome, causing damage both to their physical health menu and to the assistance provided to those who need it. There is a relatively high number of nurses with depersonalizing. These professionals start to see their work as an "additional problem" and this, possibly, resulting in inhumane treatment of patients and difficulties in relationships with co-workers.
