Resumen:
The inadequate management of basic sanitation is a characteristic problem of urban centers and has a direct influence on population's quality of life. According to the environmental licensing standards in Brazil, activities associated to basic sanitation services have the potential to cause significant environmental impacts and must be preceded by an environmental assessment. In this context, in the search has been aimed at identifying and analyzing the environmental impacts resulting from inadequate management of basic sanitation in the urban area of Pombal - PB. For conduct the study, it was adopted a methodology based on bibliographic research, field visits, photodocumentation and environmental impact assessment tools. From the results, it has been found that there is a precariousness of sanitation services in the study area. A total of 105 environmental impacts has been identified, which were classified as the significance in: "highly significant", "significant" and "less significant”. Some environmental control measures to significant impacts have been proposed, in which the principal were: promote recycling/reuse of the filter backwash water and decanters, turn off the dumpsite and prepare a PRAD to the area in question. Among the Plans and Environmental Programs that were listed, stand out: Environmental Education Program for Urban Population and Program for the Control and Monitoring Sanitation Actions Basic Municipality of Pombal - PB. In this study, it has been possible to analyze the situation of the four axes of basic sanitation in the municipality and to propose the respective measures for adaptation of sanitation services.
