Resumen:
The present work aims to analyze the image of the cangaceiro built or
represented in Luiz Gonzaga's songs in the 1950s and 1960s.
we discussed Brazilian popular music as a historical source and the relationship of music with
history and we also revisit the historiography that deals with cangaceiros in the northeastern sertao. The
cangaceiros, type nordestino, were active and strong figures in the history of their time, who with
their habits were registered in the Northeastern memory and culture. For the reasoning
of this work were used works of authors that portray the history of cangaceiros and their
area of expertise, such as Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Junior, Elise Grunspan-Jasmin, Rui
Faco and Jose Anderson Nascimento; works by authors like Jacques Le Goff and Peter Burke who
they work with the idea of historical documentation; and texts by Marcos Napolitano to
we will work on the question of music as a source and its relationship with history. Were still
lyrics of Gonzaga songs, in which we analyze the historical construction of the
cangaceiro. Whether the historian or another researcher and social producer, it is not possible to portray the
historical construction of an individual without delimiting his time and space. That's why
do a discussion about the Northeast and Northeast regions and then analyze the
cangaceiro in Gonzaga songs, focus of this work.
