The Serra de Santa Catarina located in the municipality Sao Jose da Lagoa Tapada is seen as
an exception area or enclave wet inserted in Caatinga Biome, presenting environmental
characteristics conducive to the development of subsistence agriculture, the extensive farming

socio-economic characteristics of the county based on statistical data from IBGE and PNUD,
geoenvironmental characteristics of the Sierra and used photographs to establish the existence
of environmental degradation in the area through practical activities agricultural and
extractive. The results showed that the mountain range is being degraded by the population,
through the unsuitable soil, the use of rudimentary techniques of cultivation of the land such
as deforestation, burning of vegetation and extensive cattle, which cause negative
environmental impacts as soil erosion, loss of soil fertility and compaction of the same, and
the extinction of species of local fauna and flora.
