Resumen:
This research presents the process of environmental education as it is treated by primary
school teachers in Cajazeiras (PB) in teaching Geography. Through the submission of a
questionnaire to a sample of primary school teachers belonging to both public and private
basic education and after an analysis o f their speeches, it was proved that everybody consider
EE as strongly relevant with regard to the teaching/learning process and that its practices
involve methodologies and tools fleeing from conventional and somewhat boring geography
lessons, though maintaining some traditional elements. It was also noticed that teachers'
conceptions of EE carry important principles which are still present in its characterization,
though appointing to a more "naive-romantic" speech, since the Man, and not society as a
whole, is named responsible for the damages caused to the environment. Altogether, this
proves the theoretical fragility that is hidden behind the real practice. Finally, this study serves
the purpose of stimulating reflections on the practice of teaching Geography and on the
incorporation of EE in it.
