Resumen:
This dissertation presents the results of a research carried out at Escola Cidadã Integral Jornalista José Leal Ramos, that is located in São João do Cariri, PB. We aimed to draw a profile of young high school students, aiming to create a “portrait” of these “Youths”, showing who they are, analyzing their perceptions about the School and the importance of this institution in their lives, considering the fact that there is a lack of definition of this level of education in the lives of young people, between a path to higher education, technical training, or the labor market, often failing to prioritize training for life, in the perspective of the present and the future, so that school has a real meaning for its projects. This work aims to understand the possibilities and challenges cited by young people in relation to how the school can play a role of modifying their life expectations, providing opportunities for social ascension and the formation of their citizenship as they yearn, even recognizing the gaps pointed out. The present research, of qualitative character, had the bibliographic support of authors such as Castro (1997), Dubet (2003), Abramovay (2004), Dayrell (2006), who have collaborated with studies on the Youth cathegory in Brazil. The techniques applied for data collection were the application of questionnaires and the formation of a Focus Group with young people from the three high school classes. In the body of the text, the social category “youths” and the context of secondary education in the country are presented, as well as youth expectations related to school. Considering the testimonies of the young people, we highlight the importance of interactions at school, from the perspective of social contact and the expansion of knowledge networks, highlighting the respect for the heterogeneities present in this environment. We reinforce the relevance of a school that operates and seeks to encourage the recognition of who these young people are and what they expect from them.
