Human life can be divided into three stages: preparation for work, work and post-work.
Involvement, satisfaction and importance to the work reserved induce greater career
commitment, hindering the shutdown work during retirement. The conceptualization of
retirement changes according to the conception of each person, can be understood as rest and
reward for years of work, or as a threat and punishment, which entail breaking ties and
uselessness to society. Thus, it was aimed to meet the expectations of university teachers in
transition to retirement about this process. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative
approach, conducted with twenty teachers faculty of the Federal University of Campina
Grande, campus Cajazeiras, lying in the transition to retirement. For data collection we used
a semi-structured interview structured. The data were processed and analyzed using content
analysis. Considering all the findings arising from this research, we can say that the way each
teacher sees retirement is intrinsically related to the way you live your own life, in regard to
its principles and values and priorities both in the professional and the personal. Through the
results we can affirm the importance of implementing a Program Preparing for Retirement in
the institution, which favor reflection and planning of teachers for this new stage of life.
