Leprosy is an ancient disease, permeated by stigmas and taboos, infectious disease
caused by Mycobacterium leprae, slow evolution, manifested by signs and symptoms
dermatoneurologics with skin lesions and peripheral nerves. For millennia leprosy was
considered an incurable disease, but with the introduction of polioquimioterapic (PQT)
in 1986, and the reorientation of shares diagnostic and disease control cane new
therapeutic perspectives and curability modifying the disease course. The presert study
aims to evaluate the epidemiological situation of leprosy in the district of Jericho-PB, in
the period 2001-2012, verify the socio demographic and clinical cases of lepros), relate
the proportion of contacts registered with and examined conduct the calculation of
epidemiological indicators, incidence and prevalence rate annually. The research
adopted the approach type documentary, descriptive, exploratory characterized by a
quantitative approach. For the development of the research was the basis of the data
used in the Information System of Appeal Notice (SINAN) of the Municipal Health
Department of Epidemiological Surveillance was obtained where all reported oases in
the period 2001-2012. The population consisted of all leprosy cases reported du'ing the
study period, a total of 27 cases. The sample comprised 100% of the populaticn. Data
collection was conducted in April 2013, through consultation with chips SINAN and
program access data SINAN TABWIN, installed in the county health department. The
results show that in recent years there has been a decrease of cases, more predor linantly
female, aged young adult, mixed race, low education and living in the city. Regarding
clinical form that was more prevalent dimorphic, with the operational class fication
multibacillary. Almost all patients underwent one of the schemes of poliquimie terapic-
PQT. Most cases were detected through routing, entering as a new case. Few were
assessed degree of disability and in almost all the outcome was the cure. Most contacts
were not investigated, the municipality has a high incidence and prevalence of leprosy,
not reaching the goal of eliminating the disease. In addition, there were major
limitations in the process of data collection, the restricted reporting form*;, which
showed considerable contingent of faulty information, we undertake some in erences.
With these results, the need for development of effective action on the part of n anagers,
empowering mainly practitioners of health, planning and implementing stra egies to
enhance active case search, performing the examination of contacts and early d agnosis,
with a view to control and possibly eliminate this endemic disease of the courty in the
comingyears.
