Resumo:
The healthcare professionals have positive attitudes towards the act of breastfeeding, but they
often are not experiencing each moment of the woman in the lactation process, which can
trigger the premature weaning (PW). This study had the overall goal; to understand the
practice of the nurse, such as social support in relation to breastfeeding in the city of
Cajazeiras - PB, and specific goals: to investigate how nurses promote, encourage and support
the breastfeeding during the nursing assistance in the period of puerperal gestation and to
identity the occurrence / approach of home visits by nurses to women in the immediate
postpartum period. It is about an exploratory research with a qualitative approach, held in
November 2011. The study participants were 16 women who had children in the first semester
of 2011. The data collection instrument was structured guide containing objective and
subjective questions. The information for the socio-demographic features and obstetric were
shown on table with frequency. The qualitative data which reveal the opinion of the
postpartum were analyzed through the traditional thematic way and discussed in light of the
literature pertinent to the subject. The results show that with regard to the incentive to the
practice of exclusive breastfeeding by nursing professionals, it was noted that this
contribution was not satisfactory, since the participants women reported that they were
suffering and there was nobody to support them, they eventually abandoned breastfeeding. It
is necessary the implementation of actions to encourage the breastfeeding in Basic Health
Unit in order to contribute to the decrease of the rate of premature weaning. As observed in
the present study, the nursing care provided to mothers who are in the process of
breastfeeding is insufficient to ensure an appropriate practice of breastfeeding. We aim, then hat there is an awareness of healthcare professionals, specially nurses, about this issue, seeking new actions in order to achieve what is recommended by the Ministry of Health about the breastfeeding.
