Resumen:
The newborn's weight is an important health indicator, as it allows an assessment of the child's quality of life, in addition to being one of the main determinants capable of contributing to neonatal mortality. This study aims to assess the main maternal factors that influence the weight of the newborn in the municipality of Cajazeiras, PB, 1998 - 2007. It is an exploratory study, of epidemiological nature, with a quantitative approach, conducted through the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System - DATASUS, using the Information System on Live Births (S1NASC). Data were collected looking for information about mothers and newborns contained in that system. Four variables were analyzed: maternal age, number of prenatal consultations, duration of pregnancy and type of pregnancy, correlating them with the newborn's weight. The results demonstrate a higher concentration of adequate weight for all the variables studied, during all the years investigated, as well as a very significant presence of concentration of overweight newborns in the variables studied. Discussing the results, it was concluded that the Basic Health System has been guaranteeing the right of citizens to access health care and effective care, thus contributing to the reduction of low weight when growing up. As for overweight NBs, a greater commitment from health professionals is necessary, being attentive to the question of the weight gain of the pregnant woman throughout pregnancy, because there is a direct relationship between the mother's weight gain and the weight of the newborn. born to avoid possible maternal and fetal complications during pregnancy and postpartum.
