Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that is affecting the population increasingly,
becoming a serious public health problem in many countries. The aging population,
increasing urbanization and the adoption of unhealthy lifestyles such as sedentary
lifestyle, poor diet and obesity are largely responsible for the increased incidence and
prevalence of diabetes worldwide. The objectives were to describe the
epidemiological profile of diabetic patients in the city of Cajazeiras-PB, establishing
the relationship between this disease and social determinants of this population. We
conducted a documentary and epidemiological research. The study population
consisted of 64% of females with respect to race 36.7% of subjects are white and
58.3% of brown. The degree of education 35% are illiterate and 20% have
incomplete primary education. With respect to family status 62% married, 25% are
widowed, and 13% were single. Regarding the type of diabetes 43.3% had type 1
diabetes and 56.7% type 2 diabetes. There was a greater proportion of cases aged
51-70 years in females, whereas for males the percentage was predominant age
group 71-90 years. As for risk factors and concomitant diseases to diabetes 33.3% of
cases are related to family history, smoking-related was 38.3% ,55% related to
physical inactivity, overweight / obesity 51.7%, hypertension 55%. According to
complications due to illness 8.3% of subjects had acute myocardial infarction, 10%
stroke, diabetic foot were 16.7%, 10% of amputations and complications with kidney
disease were 25% . As diabetes a chronic disease with significant complications,
descriptive studies are of great value in establishing the profile of these patients and
setting goals to be drawn about the management of this disease.
