Abstract:
This research’s general objective is to analyze the applicability of cordel in reading events under
the semiotic perspective of discourse on a 9th grade class of Elementary School. It aims to know
whether semiotics can be a way to the signification of text in a classroom and what are the
educational contributions from the utilization of cordel in reading events. Aiming to achieve
the objective and answer to the research’s questioning, we developed a proposal of educational
intervention; performed the developed intervention based on the reading of a cordel under the
semiotic perspective; described the contributions, regarding the production of meaning that
arose from the interventional implementation; highlighted the importance of reading literary
genres of popular expression, specifically the cordel, for the signification and cultural
valorization of people. Greimasian semiotics, presenting a Meaning Generative Path composed
of a fundamental, a narrative and a discursive level, was the theory used as basis. The proposal
was, using didactic transposition, to enable a type of reading that followed a path, just like
semiotics, composed of three phases. The research was of ethnographic and participant nature,
with its corpus composed of the reports of the students and of the teacher at the moment the
intervention proposal was performed. After the analysis of the students’ considerations during
the reading of the cordel, we determined that semiotics can be used as a path towards text
signification as we follow the systematic steps and strategies appointed by each phase of the
path. We also observed that using cordel under the semiotic perspective brought up an
abundance of meanings expressed by the students, which can contribute to the productivity of
the reading event conducted in the classroom as well as the valorization of popular culture. We
noticed that the text gained meaning for the students, they have understood the studied cordel
successfully, moreover, understood it based on their knowledge and analyzed it in a way that
could contribute to their personal formation.
