Igreja e Sindicato Rural: o caso de Pombal.

Abstract

The present work consists of a study about the relationship between Catholic Church and rural unionism in the northeastern hinterland, turning specifically to a case study as it seeks to analyze the founding of the Rural Workers Union of the city of Pombal, in the Paraíba backlands, in September 22, 1963. By union we mean the associations created by workers for their own safety, for the defense against the domination of the capitalist system with respect to wage issues, working hours, working conditions, etc. Rural unionism was the way found by rural workers to fight against capitalist exploitation due to the penetration of their social relations of production and the consequent expropriation of the great peasant mass. The way in which the theme will be treated will consist of proving the following basic objectives of this work: first, the fact that the Church is one of the largest and most important ideological devices of the State, being always present in the History of Brazil acting in a progressive way or reactionary will serve as a precondition for the elaboration of a first question: is there any relationship between the Catholic Church and the founding of rural workers' unions in the northeastern hinterland? Second, if the answer to the previous question is affirmative, the creation of the Rural Workers Union of Pombal - PB is an exception to this process of union organization guided by the Church or it may be another example of a rural union whose foundation was due the guidance of that institution?
