Abstract:
Cnidoscolus quercifolius Pohl (faveleira) is a species of the Euphorbiaceae family.
The faveleira can be used for medical purposes, animal and human food, and has
also been recommended for recovery of degraded areas of caatinga, since it is very
resistant to drought. The layering is a propagation technique recommended for
species with rooting problems, it is easy to perform, requiring no infrastructure, such
as a greenhouse for production of seedlings. The rooting efficiency with the use of
this technique can be improved by application of exogenous rooting inducers such as
Indole Butyric Acid (IBA). Seedlings of inferior quality have been a major cause of
mortality in field in the first year of implementation. The objective of this study was to
evaluate the effect of different concentrations of IBA on the number of days for the
appearance of roots in air layers and the influence of inducing rooting in the
development of these seedlings in nursery conditions. The seedlings were produced
by the process of layering and since the beginning of the experiment weekly
observations were made to observe the emergence of roots to the transplanting of
layers, at 90 days. Then, they were evaluated in the nursery for a period of 66 days.
The results showed that most of the layers gave its first adventitious roots on the
surface of the substrate, around 35 days after the beginning of the experiment. The
highest concentrations of IBA provided the highest percentage of rooting in layers,
reaching 90% and 80% for doses of 4.5 and 6.0 g / l of IBA, respectively. Positive
linear effect was observed with increasing concentrations of IBA for the variables
length of roots and main root length. The IBA had no significant effect on diameter
increment (mm), but there was greater value when using 6 g / l IBA.
