Résumé:
In Brasil, the predominant rural development model is still based on extensive land
use; in monoculture; on export; in the intensive use of machines, chemical fertilizers
and agrochemicals. The invisible face of sustainable reality and food security,
especially for the productive sector, is environmental education. Environmental
education should be the first step in instigating critical awareness of environmental
issues. A thematic area little explored by the local academy in the Sousa-PB region,
concerns with environmental issues moved this research with the objective of
knowing the perception of the family farmers of the Irrigated Irrigation District Várzeas
de Sousa (DPIVAS) regarding the scenario of education environment in that irrigation
district. The literature review explored the debate on Environmental Education; the
scenario of irrigation districts in Brazil; and agro-industrial systems and family
farming. As for the methodology, this research is delineated as exploratory,
descriptive and field. It is concluded that the environmental matter in the Várzeas de
Sousa is at the mercy of the initiative of the small rural producer – although actions
related to lectures or courses on the themes related to the environment or
environmental education are cited. It is a fact that many institutions could contribute
substantially with research and / or with the consequent technical extension related
to environmental education.
