Abstract:
In order to ensure the efficient management of solid waste, the National Solid Waste Policy
(PNRS) was instituted in Brazil. In this sense, the Brazilian municipalities were responsible
for implementing their environmental management plans and creating adequate structures for
the management of their waste by the year 2020. The objective of this research was to
investigate the management of municipal solid waste in the municipality of Pombal - PB. The
research has a qualitative approach, with exploratory and descriptive purpose, using
documentary and field study instruments. In the field study, the collaborators were divided
into three distinct axes: Perspective of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Perspective of the
Secretariat of Environment and Perspective of the Agents of urban cleaning; The results
emphasize a partial applicability of the PNRS in the municipality of Pombal, demonstrating
inadequate operational procedures for waste management, noncompliance with the
universalization of public sanitation services and lack of knowledge about the issue by the
social agents directly involved. It is also hoped, with this study, to contribute to the
construction of knowledge about the reality of the application of the public policies focused
on the management of solid waste in the municipalities.
