Resumo:
This dissertation is the proposal to study the penitentiary security agents operating in the State of Paraíba. It is a qualitative ethnographic research, by which seeks to understand the social constructs developed by these agents, whose objectives are to understand the differences and similarities between the performance of social roles of male and female agents; interpret the formal and informal rules that permeate the activity of correctional officers in the state of Paraiba; understand the trajectory of life of prison guards, watching the motivations that led these individuals to step into professionally in Paraiba prison system. Therefore, this research aimed to contribute the academic point of view of understanding the actions of public officials who perform their activities amidst the prison system, thus enabling better understand their social place, their social roles and their ways of dealing with a complex environment as prison. We found that the prison dynamics of these agents there are practical legal extra punishments, which are often considered illegal actions by judicial authorities and even condemned by the larger society, but they are daily practices and independent legal issues they They are carried out almost daily in the prisons. Yet we find that there is the establishment of different types of ties between prisoners and agents, which often borders between hostility and solidarity, and there are also a number of elements that exist and need to be in place for the operation of prisons is viable.
