Resumo:
In Brazil, the environmental issue was stepped up between the 60 and 70 due to
intense urban growth, in order to reflect the future of natural resources, and educate
society that productive practices should avoid environmental damage. In this sense,
society has to worry about the management of solid waste, as they are accumulated
in large urban centers uncontrollably. Thus, it became necessary increased
investment to the correct management of waste through recycling garbage collection
systems. It is in this context that this study examined the scene of the municipal solid
waste management in the municipality of Sousa / PB in the period 2015-2016,
through the exploratory and descriptive method, using the field and documentary
research. Thus it was obtained in the analysis of the results in the city of Sousa that
the old dump in the open was inactive, and hired a company that was responsible
legally for a landfill, which receives and treats municipal waste generated by the
community. Racing Sousa Prefecture only the collection and transportation of waste
to its final destination. However, there is the collection of these wastes is not yet
formally held in the city, although there is a cooperative made up of more than 45
collectors who perform this type of door-to-door collection, without the support of the
City and without partnership with the contractor. It being understood that all waste
delivered to the landfill is collected directly in the urban area without any screening
process. Fact that, worrying, since generates waste disposed of improperly overload
this landfill, which can cause damage to nature. In this context, it is suggested to
municipal management to create new strategies and planning that involves
teamwork, interconnected, especially among infrastructure departments and the
environment, seeking to raise awareness of the importance of selective collection.
