Abstract:
A the objective was to identify the factors associated with negative adherence to self-care in
people with diabetes mellitus. Cross-sectional study, carried out with users who lived with
diabetes mellitus, in a municipality in Curimataú, Paraíba, Brazil. The collections took place
between September 2019 and February 2020 using the Summary of Diabetes Self-care
Activities Questionaire. In the bivariate analysis, the prevalence ratio (PR) was calculated,
with the respective 95% confidence intervals (CI), using Pearson's chi-square test and Fisher's
exact test. Multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression, with variables with
a 5% statistical significance at the end. Of the 250 subjects participating in the study, 172
(68.8%) showed negative attitudes regarding adherence to self-care activities. The prevalence
of adopting negative attitudes related to self-care was 1.20 times higher in single / divorced /
widowed people, 1.22 higher in retirees, 1.51 higher in people who did not diet, 1.29 times
higher in people who did not practice physical activity, 1.21 higher in people with high blood
pressure and 1.27 higher in people who had dyslipidemia, when compared to people who did
not have this condition. The findings of this research will serve as a basis for the applicability
of strategies aimed at behavioral changes in diabetic users.
