Abstract:
The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between economic performance and environmental management in companies listed in the Corporate Sustainability Index of the BM & BOVESPA; For this purpose, the analysis of information from annual and sustainability reports was used to measure this relationship under the hypothesis of the Kuznets curve (EKC). The characteristics of the environmental performance studied are the presence of Internal Social Investments and External Social Investments, Social-Environmental Responsibility and Pollutant Emissions Index. Regarding the characteristics of the economic performance, the Return on Equity (ROE) and the Return on Total Assets (ROA) were taken into account. The sample is made up of the companies representing 16 sectors that compose the ISE portfolio, analyzed during the period from 2015 to 2016. After the empirical analysis, environmental performance and economic performance, the panel data approach was used through Stata software 13 to verify the relationship between these variables. The results show that none of the results confirmed EKC hypothesis.
