Résumé:
The growth of environmental pollution has stimulated the sense of responsibility and
awareness to this cause, that led to a change in the consumer profile. Facing this scenario,
companies had to adapt their strategies to stay on the market. This study aimed to
investigate the relationship between environmental performance and economic performance
of steel companies registered in the metallurgical and Sustainability Index (ISE) of Bovespa.
This time, were analyzed during 2004 to 2009 social, economic and environmental
performance of companies participating in the sample, determined as endogenous variables,
and the predetermined variables that contribute to the characterization of endogenous
variables. This is a quantitative and descriptive study was used to test the hypothesis, which
conditioned the investigation of the correlation between the environmental and economic
performance. We applied Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple linear regression
analysis to verify the hypotheses established. The survey results showed the existence of
negative correlation between the variables, according to the sample characteristics and
indicators used, therefore, it was observed that the environmental and economic
performance are correlated negatively, that is, when investment increases environmental
items on the profitability and operating the companies surveyed decreased.
